  1. Latest edition Bull NarrativeView narratives JPMorgan's September note reads August sales as consistent with a quarter toward the middle to upper end of guidance, supported by tight advanced-node capacity. Goldman's conference coverage adds a broader AI-demand argument, extending beyond accelerators to CPUs. Our lead reading is that the manufacturing-scarcity story has operating support, not just long-range ambition. The quarter-end outcome, however, remains an analyst expectation rather than a completed result.

    Bear Narrative

Capacity expansion is not free earnings. Goldman's note discusses the economics of overseas manufacturing, while JPMorgan's outlook involves substantial future investment in advanced production. Higher demand can coexist with depreciation, ramp costs and pressure on returns. The bearish interpretation is not that AI orders have disappeared; it is that investors may give too little weight to the cost and execution risk of serving them.

    Wait-and-See

Watch the quarter's actual revenue and margins, then the utilization and returns achieved as new capacity comes online. August sales support a demand reading but cannot settle the profitability of the expansion program. The next useful evidence is whether advanced-node and packaging demand converts into durable cash generation, rather than whether another capacity target or long-term market forecast becomes larger.

What changed: Since our July 5 edition, the evidence has moved beyond waiting for the next revenue release. JPMorgan's new note assesses August sales, while Goldman's conference coverage connects AI demand with advanced capacity and overseas production economics.

  2. Bull NarrativeView narratives The bull narrative says the foundry bottleneck is still translating into exceptional economics. May revenue rose 30.1% year over year, 2025 gross margin reached 59.9%, and management says AI demand is strong enough to pull forward Arizona capacity and support more advanced packaging. TSMC remains the toll road with traffic and pricing power.

    Bear Narrative

The bear narrative says the same expansion can dilute the toll-road economics. TSMC is accelerating fabs across Arizona, Japan, Europe, and Taiwan while guiding $52 billion to $56 billion of 2026 capex. Overseas cost gaps, geopolitics, and customer pressure can consume scarcity rents before they reach free cash flow.

    Wait-and-See

The wait-and-see narrative has a cleaner catalyst than a rumor: July 16. TSMC guides Q2 revenue of $39.0 billion to $40.2 billion and gross margin of 65.5% to 67.5%; June monthly revenue was still unpublished at the July 5 cutoff. The bull story is leading, but the next scorecard is close enough to demand proof.

    [1] [3] [4]

What changed: This week produced no new operating result. Existing AGM disclosures still support the long-term AI and margin case, so the argument moved toward the July 16 scorecard: guidance is strong, but now the numbers must clear it.

  3. Bull NarrativeView narratives The bull narrative says the quiet winner of an arms race is the foundry everyone must visit. May revenue rose 30.1% year over year, advanced capacity remains tight, and a positive credit outlook argues that even a $52 billion to $56 billion capex program can coexist with stronger cash generation.

    Bear Narrative

The bear narrative says a toll road can still overbuild. Overseas fabs, geopolitical redundancy, materials inflation, and a huge multiyear capex bill can consume the very pricing power that makes the story attractive.

    Wait-and-See

The wait-and-see narrative asks one clean question: do higher wafer prices and fuller fabs reach free cash flow after overseas costs? The next earnings and monthly sales should show whether scarcity is becoming shareholder returns or merely more concrete.

  4. Wait-and-SeeView narratives The wait-and-see narrative wants proof that AI demand, packaging capacity, and gross margins can stay aligned as TSMC expands outside Taiwan.

    Bull Narrative

The buyer narrative says TSMC is the toll road for the AI chip cycle. If advanced process and CoWoS packaging remain bottlenecks, demand can keep reinforcing pricing power.

    Bear Narrative

The seller narrative worries that high capex, overseas fab complexity, and geopolitical risk can eat into the returns of an otherwise excellent business.
